Steve Benson began playing in a symphonic orchestra when he was 15 and his taste for World Music led him to the Sitar, which he plays allowing the deep resonance and ethereal quality of the style to not overwhelm the instruction and or meditation. Thus the music can rise and fall as required not as the musician dictates, and allowing the long complex tradition of raga to be used in a shorter approach. He has pushed this process further by working with traditional Chinese musician Jeff La to create bold sonic vistas to help facilitate Mindfulness. In addition to playing the Sitar in the North Indian musical tradition, he creates meditative atmospheric music on the Oud in the near Eastern tradition as well as Lap Steel and Pedal Steel guitars, Dobro, and Mandolin. He plays with a long list of bands across New England and has an even longer list of album credits. Steve takes inspiration from the great music and musicians, past and present. But most of all, the great compassion music evokes in us all.
