Terry Lacy (RYT 200) took his first yoga class over 40 years ago in 1973 and has been practicing yoga, combined with a professional dance career, ever since. Along with his practice of downward facing dog, eagle, cobra and the rest of the yoga menagerie, he continued another sort of weird attachment with animals and dance performance through the years. His first dance gig was with 5 tigers, 15 elephants and a baby bear on a motorcycle at the (now defunct) Barnum and Bailey theme park called Circus World. For 10 years he danced in a bear suit for the Magnificent Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall (Sugar Plum Bear being one of many notable portrayals), and then there were numerous other critter roles during his 22-year-stint with New York City Opera Ballet (including a Griffelkin, a gentle fawn and the ass end of a horse). There are additional notable dance credits (of a less furry variety) - including roles with Metropolitan Opera in NYC, Washington Ballet, Milwaukee Melody Top and as a performer, dance captain and choreographer for Carol Channing’s National Tour of Hello, Dolly.
Terry also had a momentary diversion into the world of boxing with his choreography for Andy Kaufman and Blondie’s Debbie Harry in Broadway’s Teaneck Tanzi. Terry's 35-year professional dance performing career, with all of its associated physical and mental stresses, was only made possible by mixing the art of dancing with the mind and body centering techniques of yoga. Now, all of Terry's classes incorporate the wisdom of yoga (as generously inspired by his teachers Paul and Suzee Grilley and Issac Pena among a very many others) alongside his decades of dance and choreography experience. For the last 7 years Terry has been teaching at Om Land Yoga - a yoga studio with 3 locations in northern Maine that he co-owns with his partner, Eric Sirois. |
